Inside a company’s effort to draw extra oysters in Bay Space waters

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Tampa Bay Watch actively works to do what its title says.

“All of us love this space, all of us love the leisure aspect of it (and) the environmental aspect of it, and we’re attempting to protect that as a lot as potential,” shared Myles Schanck. 

He’s the Oyster Reek Program Specialist, and as such, he’s accountable for creating synthetic reefs all through the Tampa Bay estuary.

What they’re saying:

“The oyster inhabitants has dipped,” Schanck admitted. “With these initiatives, we’re seeing an enormous profit in accruing these oysters within the native space. Oysters spawn with different oysters.”

The groups at Tampa Bay Watch create reef balls from concrete and oyster shells to create an setting that pulls mollusks.

“We’ve got an exquisite challenge referred to as ‘Shells with Shorelines.’ We really work with eating places within the native space to recycle their oyster shells,” mentioned Schanck. “These reef balls are literally blended with a mix of environmentally pleasant supplies that decrease the PH stability to draw oysters.”
